Artist Info
Birth:in Fairbanks, AKDane Johansen is a classical cellist and recording artist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and innovative approach to music-making. Born in Fairbanks, Alaska in 1986, Johansen began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He went on to study at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Juilliard School, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in cello performance. Johansen's early career was marked by a series of impressive accomplishments, including winning the prestigious Cleveland International Piano Competition in 2007 and performing as a soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. He also collaborated with a number of renowned musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. In 2014, Johansen embarked on a unique and ambitious project that would set him apart from his peers in the classical music world. He decided to walk the entire length of the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile pilgrimage route in northern Spain, while carrying his cello on his back. The journey took him 40 days and inspired him to create a new album, "The Walk to Fisterra," which features solo cello compositions that he recorded in various locations along the route. The album was released in 2015 to critical acclaim, with reviewers praising Johansen's technical skill and emotional depth. The New York Times called it "a remarkable achievement" and "a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and connect people across cultures." Johansen's success with "The Walk to Fisterra" led to a number of other innovative projects that combined his love of music with his passion for travel and exploration. In 2016, he embarked on a tour of the United States that took him to 36 different states, where he performed in a variety of unconventional venues, including national parks, museums, and even a maximum-security prison. The tour was documented in a film called "Strangers on the Earth," which was released in 2017 and won several awards at film festivals around the world. The film follows Johansen as he travels across the country, meeting people from all walks of life and sharing his music with them. In addition to his solo work, Johansen is also a member of the Escher String Quartet, which has been praised for its "warm, full-bodied playing" and "impeccable ensemble work." The quartet has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Wigmore Hall in London. Johansen's dedication to his craft has earned him numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In addition to his Cleveland International Piano Competition win, he has received the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Sphinx Medal of Excellence, and the Cleveland Arts Prize. He has also been a featured artist on NPR's "Performance Today" and has been profiled in publications such as The New Yorker and The Wall Street Journal. Despite his many accomplishments, Johansen remains committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and finding new ways to connect with audiences. He continues to tour and record, and his latest album, "The Great Animal Orchestra," features compositions inspired by the sounds of the natural world. Through his innovative projects and virtuosic performances, Dane Johansen has established himself as one of the most exciting and dynamic musicians of his generation.More....
