Born on August 18, 1949, in Essen, Germany, Perick showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later studied conducting, piano, and composition at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen. Perick began his career as a conductor in 1974 when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Essen Opera. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was appointed as the principal conductor of the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra in 1978. He held this position for six years and during this time, he established himself as a rising star in the world of classical music. In 1984, Perick was appointed as the principal conductor of the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 1991. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, including the complete symphonies of Beethoven and Brahms. He also conducted the orchestra in several international tours, including performances in Japan, the United States, and Europe. Perick's success in Stuttgart led to his appointment as the music director of the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg in 1991. He held this position for ten years and during this time, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, including the complete symphonies of Mahler and Bruckner. He also conducted the orchestra in several international tours, including performances in China, Japan, and the United States. In addition to his work with the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra, Perick has also conducted many other orchestras around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also conducted numerous opera productions, including performances at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Perick has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1992, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his contributions to the arts. He has also received the Brahms Prize from the Brahms Society in Schleswig-Holstein and the Hans von Bülow Medal from the Berlin Philharmonic.
