The Esoterics is a Seattle-based vocal ensemble that specializes in contemporary choral music. Founded in 1992 by Eric Banks, the group has gained a reputation for its innovative programming and virtuosic performances. Eric Banks was born in 1969 in New York City. He grew up in a musical family and began studying piano at a young age. He later attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a degree in music composition. After graduation, he moved to Seattle and began working as a freelance composer and conductor. In 1992, Banks founded The Esoterics with the goal of exploring the rich and diverse world of contemporary choral music. The group's name reflects its mission to uncover hidden gems and lesser-known works by composers from around the world. Over the years, The Esoterics has become known for its adventurous programming and commitment to new music. The group has commissioned and premiered over 200 works by composers from around the world, including many who have gone on to become major figures in the contemporary classical music scene. One of the highlights of The Esoterics' career was their performance at the 2002 World Choral Symposium in Minneapolis. The group was one of only a handful of American choirs invited to perform at the prestigious event, which brought together choirs from around the world for a week of concerts and workshops. In addition to their performances, The Esoterics has also received numerous awards and accolades for their recordings. Their 2005 album, "The Esoterics: Live in Japan," was named one of the top classical recordings of the year by The Seattle Times. The group's 2010 album, "The Esoterics: The Art of Sound," was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Choral Performance category. Despite their success, The Esoterics remains committed to their mission of exploring new and innovative music. The group continues to commission and premiere new works, and their performances are always eagerly anticipated by audiences and critics alike.
