David Jalbert is a Canadian classical pianist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and insightful interpretations of a wide range of repertoire. Born on May 2, 1977, in Lévis, Quebec, Jalbert began playing the piano at the age of four and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Jalbert's musical education began at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec, where he studied with Louise Bessette and Richard Raymond. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he worked with Yoheved Kaplinsky and Emanuel Ax. Jalbert also received guidance from renowned pianists such as Leon Fleisher, Menahem Pressler, and Marc-André Hamelin. Jalbert's career as a concert pianist began to take off in the early 2000s, when he won several prestigious competitions, including the International Stepping Stone of the Canadian Music Competition, the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition, and the Honens International Piano Competition. These victories helped to establish Jalbert as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation. Since then, Jalbert has performed extensively throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, appearing as a soloist with major orchestras such as the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also given recitals at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Salle Gaveau in Paris. Jalbert's repertoire is wide-ranging and includes works by composers from the Baroque era to the present day. He has a particular affinity for the music of Franz Liszt, and has recorded several of the composer's works, including the Sonata in B minor and the Transcendental Etudes. Jalbert has also recorded the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven, as well as works by Chopin, Schumann, Debussy, Ravel, and Prokofiev. In addition to his performing career, Jalbert is also an active recording artist and has released several critically acclaimed albums. His debut album, featuring works by Chopin and Liszt, was released in 2007 and was followed by recordings of Beethoven's piano sonatas, works by Ravel and Debussy, and a collection of Canadian piano music. Jalbert's recordings have received numerous awards and nominations, including a Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year in 2012. Jalbert is also a dedicated teacher and has served on the faculty of several institutions, including the University of Ottawa, the University of Montreal, and the Orford Music Academy. He has also given masterclasses at universities and conservatories around the world, sharing his insights and expertise with the next generation of pianists. Throughout his career, Jalbert has been recognized for his exceptional talent and artistry. In addition to his competition wins and recording awards, he has received numerous accolades, including the Virginia Parker Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Prix Opus from the Conseil québécois de la musique, and the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honors. Despite his many achievements, Jalbert remains humble and dedicated to his craft.
