The ensemble was founded in 1999 and has since become one of the most sought-after chamber music groups in the world. The founding members of the Mirecourt Trio are pianist Susan Jolles, violinist Calvin Wiersma, and cellist Caroline Stinson. All three musicians had established successful careers as soloists and chamber musicians before coming together to form the trio. Jolles had performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, while Wiersma had been a member of the Manhattan String Quartet and the New York Chamber Soloists. Stinson had performed with the Lark Quartet and the New York Philharmonic. The trio takes its name from the town of Mirecourt in northeastern France, which is known for its rich history of violin making. The town has been home to many famous luthiers, including Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, who made instruments for some of the greatest musicians of the 19th century. The Mirecourt Trio chose this name as a tribute to the town's musical heritage and the importance of the violin in classical music.
