Orchestre de Bretagne is a classical music ensemble based in Rennes, France. Founded in 1988, the orchestra has become one of the most prominent ensembles in the region, known for its high-quality performances and commitment to promoting classical music to a wider audience. The orchestra was founded by conductor Stefan Sanderling, who served as its music director until 1995. Sanderling was succeeded by Marc Feldman, who led the orchestra until 2008. Since then, the orchestra has been led by Grant Llewellyn, a Welsh conductor who has worked with some of the world's leading orchestras. Orchestre de Bretagne is made up of around 50 musicians, many of whom are from the region. The orchestra's repertoire includes a wide range of classical music, from Baroque to contemporary, and it has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors over the years. One of the highlights of Orchestre de Bretagne's history was its performance at the 1992 Festival de Saint-Denis, where it played Beethoven's Ninth Symphony under the baton of Stefan Sanderling. The performance was widely praised for its energy and precision, and it helped to establish the orchestra's reputation as a leading ensemble in France. In 1995, Orchestre de Bretagne embarked on its first international tour, which took it to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The tour was a great success, and it helped to raise the orchestra's profile outside of France. Over the years, Orchestre de Bretagne has won many awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2002, the orchestra won the Victoire de la Musique Classique award for its recording of Mozart's Piano Concertos with soloist Jean-Philippe Collard. The orchestra has also been nominated for several other Victoire de la Musique awards, including Best Orchestra and Best Recording. In addition to its regular concert series in Rennes and other cities in Brittany, Orchestre de Bretagne has also performed at many prestigious venues and festivals around the world. These include the Edinburgh International Festival, the BBC Proms, and the Salzburg Festival. One of the orchestra's most notable recent performances was its collaboration with the French electronic music duo Daft Punk in 2013. The orchestra played a selection of the duo's hits, arranged for orchestra by composer Joseph Trapanese, at a concert in Rennes. The concert was a huge success, and it helped to introduce classical music to a new and younger audience. Orchestre de Bretagne is also committed to promoting classical music to young people and to those who might not otherwise have access to it. The orchestra runs a number of educational programs, including concerts and workshops for schoolchildren, and it has also collaborated with local community groups to bring classical music to a wider audience. Overall, Orchestre de Bretagne has established itself as one of the leading classical music ensembles in France and beyond. With its commitment to high-quality performances, innovative programming, and outreach to new audiences, the orchestra is sure to continue to thrive in the years to come.
