Born on January 12, 1965, in Hamilton, Ontario, Braun grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. He studied at the University of Toronto and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia before embarking on a successful career as an opera singer. Braun made his professional debut in 1989 with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, where he performed the role of Papageno in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." He quickly gained recognition for his rich, warm voice and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. In 1991, he won the prestigious Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, which launched his career in the United States. Throughout the 1990s, Braun performed with many of the world's leading opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. He became known for his performances in Mozart operas, particularly "Don Giovanni" and "The Marriage of Figaro," as well as in works by Verdi, Puccini, and Wagner. One of Braun's most memorable performances came in 1997, when he sang the role of Count Almaviva in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" at the Salzburg Festival in Austria. The production, directed by Claus Guth, was widely praised for its innovative staging and Braun's nuanced portrayal of the Count. The performance was later released on DVD and has become a classic of the operatic repertoire. In addition to his work in opera, Braun has also established himself as a concert singer and recitalist. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors of our time, including James Levine, Daniel Barenboim, and Simon Rattle. Braun's repertoire as a concert singer is wide-ranging, encompassing works by Bach, Handel, Schubert, Brahms, and Mahler, among others. He has also premiered works by contemporary composers, including John Adams, Osvaldo Golijov, and Kaija Saariaho. Throughout his career, Braun has received numerous awards and accolades for his singing. In 1998, he was awarded the prestigious Richard Tucker Award, which is given annually to an outstanding American opera singer. He has also been honored with the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honors, and the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, which recognizes excellence in the performing arts in Canada. In recent years, Braun has continued to perform at the highest level, both in opera and in concert. He has also become a respected teacher and mentor, serving on the faculty of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music and giving masterclasses around the world. Russell Braun's career as a classical music artist has been marked by his exceptional talent, his dedication to his craft, and his ability to connect with audiences through his singing. He has established himself as one of the leading baritones of his generation and a true ambassador for the art of classical music.More....
