Born in Toronto, Canada, in 1962, Whicher grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. She studied voice at the University of Toronto and later at the Royal Conservatory of Music, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree. Whicher's career as a professional singer began in the early 1990s, when she made her debut with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto. She quickly gained recognition for her powerful and expressive voice, as well as her ability to convey emotion and nuance in her performances. Over the years, she has performed with many of the world's leading opera companies and orchestras, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of Whicher's career was her performance in the title role of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 1997. Her portrayal of the feisty and independent Susanna was widely praised for its wit, charm, and vocal agility. She went on to perform the role in many other productions around the world, cementing her reputation as one of the leading interpreters of Mozart's music. Another notable performance by Whicher was her portrayal of the tragic heroine Cio-Cio-San in Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" at the Canadian Opera Company in 2009. Her portrayal of the young geisha who falls in love with an American naval officer was praised for its sensitivity, vulnerability, and emotional depth. She received critical acclaim for her performance, and the production was hailed as one of the highlights of the Canadian opera season. In addition to her work in opera, Whicher has also established herself as a leading interpreter of art song and oratorio. She has performed with many of the world's leading chamber music ensembles, including the St. Lawrence String Quartet, the Gryphon Trio, and the Amici Chamber Ensemble. She has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Andrew Davis, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. One of the highlights of Whicher's career as a recitalist was her performance of Schubert's "Winterreise" at the Toronto Summer Music Festival in 2015. Her interpretation of the cycle of songs about a man's journey through a winter landscape was praised for its emotional intensity, musicality, and dramatic power. She has also recorded many other works of art song and oratorio, including works by Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Schumann. Throughout her career, Whicher has received many awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. She was awarded the Order of Canada in 2011 for her "outstanding contributions to the arts in Canada." She has also received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Toronto Arts Award, and the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Performance in Opera. In addition to her work as a performer, Whicher is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught voice at the University of Toronto and the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music, and has given masterclasses and workshops around the world.
