The John Wilson Orchestra is a British orchestra that specializes in performing music from the golden age of Hollywood and the Broadway stage. Founded in 1994 by conductor John Wilson, the ensemble has become renowned for its faithful and dynamic renditions of classic film scores and show tunes. John Wilson was born in Gateshead, England in 1972 and grew up in a musical family. He began playing the piano at a young age and later studied conducting at the Royal College of Music in London. After graduation, he worked as an assistant conductor for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1994, Wilson founded the John Wilson Orchestra with the aim of reviving the music of the 1930s and 1940s. He assembled a group of top-notch musicians, many of whom were fellow graduates of the Royal College of Music, and began rehearsing and performing classic film scores and show tunes. In 2011, they won the Gramophone Award for Best Orchestral Recording for their album "That's Entertainment: A Celebration of the MGM Film Musical."
