The UCSC Chamber Singers is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1972 at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The ensemble is made up of undergraduate and graduate students who are passionate about choral music and dedicated to achieving excellence in their performances. The founding of the UCSC Chamber Singers was the result of a collaboration between the university's music department and the Santa Cruz community. The ensemble was created to provide an opportunity for students to study and perform choral music at a high level, while also serving as a cultural resource for the local community. Over the years, the UCSC Chamber Singers have become known for their exceptional performances of a wide range of choral music, from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works. The ensemble has also collaborated with a number of renowned composers and conductors, including John Adams, Philip Glass, and Meredith Monk. One of the main members of the UCSC Chamber Singers is their conductor, Nathaniel Berman. Berman has been the ensemble's director since 2011 and has led the group to numerous accolades and awards. Under his leadership, the UCSC Chamber Singers have performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. One of the highlights of the UCSC Chamber Singers' performances was their 2015 concert at Carnegie Hall. The ensemble performed a program of works by American composers, including Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, and Leonard Bernstein. The concert was met with critical acclaim, with The New York Times praising the ensemble's "crisp, clear sound" and "impressive precision." In addition to their performances, the UCSC Chamber Singers have also received numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2016, the ensemble was awarded the American Prize in Choral Performance, which recognizes excellence in choral music across the United States. Another notable achievement for the UCSC Chamber Singers was their participation in the 2018 World Symposium on Choral Music in Beijing, China. The ensemble was one of only a handful of American choirs invited to perform at the prestigious event, which brought together choral musicians from around the world to share their music and ideas.
