Born in Switzerland in 1987, Zappa began his musical journey at a young age, showing a natural aptitude for the cello. He began taking lessons at the age of six and quickly progressed, winning his first competition at the age of nine. Zappa continued to hone his skills throughout his childhood and teenage years, studying with some of the most renowned cellists in Europe. He attended the Conservatoire de Lausanne, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in cello performance. He then went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, Germany, where he earned his Master's degree in cello performance. During his studies, Zappa began to gain recognition as a talented cellist, winning several competitions and performing in prestigious venues throughout Europe. He was awarded the first prize at the Swiss Youth Music Competition in 2003 and the first prize at the International Cello Competition in Liezen, Austria in 2005. He also performed as a soloist with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and the Munich Chamber Orchestra. After completing his studies, Zappa began to focus on conducting as well as cello performance. He studied conducting with renowned conductors such as Bernard Haitink and Daniel Harding, and began to conduct orchestras throughout Europe. In 2012, he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, a position he held until 2017. As a conductor, Zappa has led orchestras in some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with some of the most renowned soloists in classical music, including pianist Martha Argerich and violinist Maxim Vengerov.
