Le Concert Spirituel Chorus is a French classical music ensemble that has been active since the 18th century. The group was founded in 1725 by Anne Danican Philidor, a French composer and musician. The ensemble was originally called the Concert Spirituel, and it was one of the first public concert series in Paris. The concerts were held in the Tuileries Palace, and they were attended by members of the French aristocracy. The Concert Spirituel quickly became popular, and it attracted some of the most talented musicians of the time. The ensemble performed a wide range of music, including operas, cantatas, and instrumental works. The concerts were known for their high quality and their innovative programming. The Concert Spirituel was also one of the first ensembles to perform music by living composers, including Jean-Philippe Rameau and Christoph Willibald Gluck. In 1770, the Concert Spirituel was disbanded due to financial difficulties. However, the ensemble was revived in 1784 by a group of musicians led by François-Joseph Gossec. The new ensemble was called Le Concert de la Loge Olympique, and it continued the tradition of the Concert Spirituel by performing a wide range of music. The ensemble was also known for its support of the French Revolution, and it performed music that celebrated the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity. In 1791, Le Concert de la Loge Olympique was renamed Le Concert de la Société Olympique, and it continued to perform until 1794. The ensemble was then disbanded due to political instability in France. However, in 1802, the ensemble was revived once again, this time under the name Le Concert de la Société Philharmonique. The ensemble continued to perform until 1824, when it was disbanded due to financial difficulties. In 1987, the ensemble was revived once again, this time under the name Le Concert Spirituel. The ensemble was led by Hervé Niquet, a French conductor and harpsichordist. Under Niquet's leadership, Le Concert Spirituel became one of the most respected ensembles in France. The ensemble performed a wide range of music, including works by Baroque composers such as Bach and Handel, as well as works by Romantic composers such as Berlioz and Wagner. Le Concert Spirituel has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in France, including the Opéra de Paris and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. The ensemble has also performed at international festivals, including the Edinburgh International Festival and the Salzburg Festival. Le Concert Spirituel has recorded numerous albums, including recordings of works by Rameau, Gluck, and Mozart. One of the highlights of Le Concert Spirituel's career was its performance of Mozart's Requiem in D minor in 2006. The performance was held at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, and it was conducted by Hervé Niquet. The performance was widely praised for its emotional intensity and its musical precision. Le Concert Spirituel has also received numerous awards and honors throughout its history. In 2003, the ensemble was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Rameau's Les Indes Galantes. In 2010, the ensemble was awarded the Victoire de la Musique Classique for its recording of Mozart's Requiem in D minor. Today, Le Concert Spirituel continues to perform and record music.
