He was born on December 7, 1922, in New York City, and grew up in a family that valued music. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, which exposed him to music at an early age. DeCormier's passion for music grew as he got older, and he began studying music formally. He attended the Juilliard School of Music, where he studied composition and conducting. After completing his studies, he began his career as a conductor and composer. One of the highlights of DeCormier's career was his work with the Robert Shaw Chorale. He joined the group in 1948 and worked with them for ten years. During his time with the Robert Shaw Chorale, DeCormier helped to establish the group as one of the premier choral ensembles in the world. He also worked with the group on several recordings, including the Grammy Award-winning album "Christmas Hymns and Carols." In addition to his work with the Robert Shaw Chorale, DeCormier also worked with other notable groups, including the New York Choral Society and the Gregg Smith Singers. He also worked as a conductor for several Broadway productions, including "The King and I" and "Fiddler on the Roof." DeCormier was also a prolific composer and arranger. He wrote music for several films, including "The Crucible" and "The Bostonians." He also arranged music for several notable artists, including Harry Belafonte and Pete Seeger. Throughout his career, DeCormier received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of music. In 1996, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Bill Clinton. He was also inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2008. Despite his many accomplishments, DeCormier remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to work as a conductor and composer until his death on November 7, 2017, at the age of 94. His legacy lives on through his music and the countless musicians he inspired throughout his career.More....
