Born in New York City in 1961, Tomkins grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a classical pianist. Tomkins began playing the cello at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Tomkins attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied with Leonard Rose and Channing Robbins. After graduating, she went on to study with William Pleeth in London and then with Jaap ter Linden in Amsterdam. Tomkins also studied baroque cello with Anner Bylsma and Wieland Kuijken. Tomkins has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the San Francisco Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed as a soloist with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the Handel and Haydn Society, and the Portland Baroque Orchestra. One of Tomkins' most notable performances was her solo cello performance of Bach's Suites for Unaccompanied Cello at the Oregon Bach Festival in 2006. The performance was widely praised for its technical virtuosity and emotional depth. Tomkins has also performed at the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Ravinia Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival. In addition to her work as a performer, Tomkins is also a respected music educator. She has taught at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Oregon.
