Eric Zivian is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a pianist, fortepianist, and chamber musician. Born in 1963 in California, Zivian grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, so it was only natural that Zivian would follow in their footsteps. Zivian began his musical education at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied piano with Milton Salkind. He later went on to study with Rosina Lhevinne at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree. Zivian continued his studies at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, where he earned his Master of Music degree. Throughout his career, Zivian has been recognized for his exceptional talent and has received numerous awards and accolades. In 1988, he was a finalist in the Naumburg International Piano Competition, and in 1990, he won the First Prize in the Carmel Music Society Competition. He has also been a recipient of the prestigious McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians. Zivian's career as a pianist has taken him all over the world, and he has performed with some of the most renowned orchestras and conductors in the industry. He has been a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, among others. He has also collaborated with conductors such as Edo de Waart, Hugh Wolff, and Nicholas McGegan. In addition to his work as a pianist, Zivian is also a highly regarded fortepianist. He has performed on period instruments with many of the leading early music ensembles in the United States, including the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the American Bach Soloists, and the Portland Baroque Orchestra. He has also been a guest artist at the Boston Early Music Festival and the Berkeley Early Music Festival. Zivian's passion for chamber music has also been a major focus of his career. He is a founding member of the Zivian-Tomkins Duo, which has been praised for its "exquisite playing" and "deep musical understanding." He has also been a member of the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble since 1993, and has collaborated with many other chamber groups and musicians throughout his career. One of the highlights of Zivian's career was his performance of Beethoven's complete piano sonatas in a series of concerts in San Francisco in 2013. The series was a major undertaking, and Zivian spent years preparing for the performances. The concerts were a huge success, and Zivian was praised for his "impeccable technique" and "deep understanding" of Beethoven's music. Zivian is also a dedicated teacher, and has taught at many prestigious institutions throughout his career. He has been a faculty member at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Minnesota. He has also been a guest artist and teacher at many other institutions, including the Juilliard School, the New England Conservatory, and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. In addition to his work as a performer and teacher, Zivian is also a composer and arranger. He has written several works for piano and chamber ensembles, and has arranged many pieces for various ensembles and instruments. Throughout his career, Zivian has been dedicated to promoting classical music and bringing it to new audiences.
