The Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra (OPL) is a classical music ensemble based in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. The orchestra was founded in 1933 as the "Orchestre Symphonique de la Radiodiffusion Nationale" and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Europe. The OPL has had a number of notable conductors throughout its history, including Louis de Froment, Leopold Hager, Bramwell Tovey, and Emmanuel Krivine. The current music director is Gustavo Gimeno, who took over the position in 2015. The orchestra has a core of around 98 musicians, with additional players brought in for larger works. The OPL has a strong commitment to contemporary music, regularly commissioning and performing new works by composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina, Pascal Dusapin, and Magnus Lindberg. One of the highlights of the OPL's history was its performance at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels, where it played for an audience of over 10,000 people. The orchestra has also performed at a number of prestigious venues, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. In addition to its regular concert schedule, the OPL has also been involved in a number of recording projects. The OPL has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards for its recordings, including a nomination for Best Orchestral Performance in 2018 for its recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 6.
