Benjamin Northey is a renowned Australian conductor and classical music artist. He was born on August 6, 1975, in Melbourne, Australia. Northey grew up in a family of musicians, and his parents were both music teachers. He started playing the piano at the age of four and later learned to play the trumpet and French horn. Northey attended the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, where he studied trumpet and conducting. He then went on to study at the University of Melbourne, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance. Northey continued his studies at the University of Melbourne, where he earned a Master of Music degree in conducting. Northey's career as a conductor began in 2003 when he was appointed as the Associate Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was appointed as the orchestra's Resident Conductor in 2007. Northey has also served as the Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in New Zealand and the Associate Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his career, Northey has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also conducted many of Australia's leading orchestras, including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Northey has received many awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2002, he was awarded the Brian Stacey Memorial Scholarship for Young Australian Conductors. In 2006, he was awarded the Symphony Australia Young Conductor of the Year Award. In 2010, he was awarded the Melbourne Prize Outstanding Musician Award. One of Northey's most significant achievements was his appointment as the Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in 2015. This appointment came after the devastating earthquake that struck Christchurch in 2011, which caused significant damage to the city's infrastructure, including the orchestra's concert hall. Northey played a crucial role in the orchestra's recovery, and his leadership helped to rebuild the orchestra's reputation and secure its future. Northey has also been involved in many educational and community outreach programs throughout his career. He has worked with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's Education Department, where he has conducted many concerts for school children. He has also worked with the Australian Youth Orchestra, where he has mentored young musicians and conducted many concerts. In addition to his work as a conductor, Northey is also an accomplished trumpet player.
