From a young age, Leech showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. He began playing the piano at the age of six and later learned to play the violin and the viola. Leech attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he studied composition, conducting, and viola. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1982 and went on to complete a Master of Music degree in composition at the University of Manchester in 1984. After completing his studies, Leech began his career as a freelance musician, composer, and conductor. He worked with various orchestras and ensembles, including the BBC Philharmonic, the Halle Orchestra, and the Manchester Camerata. He also worked as a music teacher and lecturer at several universities and colleges in the UK. Leech's compositions have been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra. His music has been featured in numerous festivals, including the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Cheltenham Music Festival. One of Leech's most significant achievements was the premiere of his opera, "The Fall of Jerusalem," at the Royal Northern College of Music in 1992.
