Born on August 21, 1973, in Durban, South Africa, Hope grew up in a family of musicians. His mother was a pianist, and his father was a writer and a professor of literature. Hope's parents were both anti-apartheid activists, and they moved to London when he was four years old to escape the oppressive regime in South Africa. Hope began playing the violin at the age of four, and he quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. Hope's early career was marked by a series of impressive performances and awards. He won the Eurovision Young Musicians competition in 1993, and he was named the youngest-ever member of the Beaux Arts Trio in 1997.
