The orchestra was founded in 1954 as the Ostrava Symphony Orchestra, and it was renamed in honor of the Czech composer Leoš Janáček in 1990. The Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra has a rich history of performing classical music from a variety of composers, including Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and of course, Janáček himself. The orchestra has also premiered works by contemporary composers, such as Petr Eben and Pavel Haas. The orchestra has had several notable conductors throughout its history, including Václav Neumann, who served as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1958 to 1964. Other notable conductors include Otakar Trhlík, Petr Altrichter, and Heiko Mathias Förster. One of the highlights of the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra's history was its performance at the 1967 Prague Spring International Music Festival. The orchestra performed Janáček's Sinfonietta, which was conducted by Václav Neumann.
