Ensemble Arabesques is a classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of Middle Eastern and North African music. The ensemble was founded in 1995 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for the rich and diverse musical traditions of the Arab world. The founding members of Ensemble Arabesques were all accomplished musicians in their own right, with extensive experience in both classical and traditional music. They included Nabil Khemir, a Tunisian oud player and composer; Mohamed Ali Kammoun, a Tunisian percussionist; and Fawzi Chekili, a Tunisian violinist. From the beginning, Ensemble Arabesques set out to explore the many different styles and genres of Arab music, from the classical traditions of Andalusia and the Ottoman Empire to the folk music of North Africa and the Middle East. The ensemble also sought to incorporate elements of Western classical music into their performances, creating a unique and innovative sound that blended the best of both worlds. Over the years, Ensemble Arabesques has become one of the most respected and acclaimed ensembles in the world of classical music. They have performed at major festivals and concert halls around the globe, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. One of the highlights of Ensemble Arabesques' career was their performance at the 2002 World Music Expo in Seville, Spain. The ensemble was chosen to represent Tunisia at the event, which brought together musicians from all over the world to showcase their music and collaborate with one another. Another notable performance by Ensemble Arabesques was their collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2008. The ensemble was invited to perform with the orchestra as part of a special concert series that celebrated the cultural diversity of Berlin. The performance was a huge success, with critics praising the ensemble's virtuosity and the innovative fusion of Arab and Western classical music. Ensemble Arabesques has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2001, they were awarded the prestigious Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros, which recognizes excellence in the field of world music. The ensemble has also been nominated for several other awards, including the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award and the German Record Critics' Award. Despite their many achievements, Ensemble Arabesques remains committed to their mission of promoting and preserving the rich musical traditions of the Arab world. They continue to perform and record new music, and to collaborate with other musicians and artists from around the world. Through their music, Ensemble Arabesques seeks to bridge cultural divides and promote understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures and traditions of the Arab world.
