Born in New York City in 1961, Hecht showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He was a prodigious talent and quickly developed a deep love for classical music. Hecht's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. He began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Adele Marcus, at the Juilliard School in New York City. Under Marcus's tutelage, Hecht developed his skills and honed his craft. Hecht's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly began to make a name for himself in the world of classical music. He won his first major competition at the age of 12, when he was awarded first prize in the Young Artists Competition of the National Guild of Piano Teachers. Hecht continued to excel in his studies and performances, and in 1980, he graduated from the Juilliard School with a Bachelor of Music degree. He then went on to study with renowned pianist and teacher, Leon Fleisher, at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Hecht's career as a professional pianist began to take off in the 1980s. He made his debut with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 1982, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. He also performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1985, Hecht won the prestigious Naumburg International Piano Competition, which helped to further establish his reputation as a world-class pianist. He also won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1986, which led to numerous performances throughout the United States and Europe. Throughout his career, Hecht has performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras and conductors. He has collaborated with conductors such as Leonard Slatkin, Christoph Eschenbach, and James Conlon, and has performed with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Hecht is also a dedicated chamber musician and has performed with some of the world's most renowned chamber ensembles. He has collaborated with the Tokyo String Quartet, the Emerson String Quartet, and the Guarneri String Quartet, among others. In addition to his performances, Hecht is also a dedicated teacher and has taught at numerous institutions throughout his career. He has been a faculty member at the Peabody Institute, the University of Maryland, and the University of Miami, among others. Hecht's recordings have also received critical acclaim. His recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1990. He has also recorded works by Brahms, Schumann, and Chopin, among others. Throughout his career, Hecht has received numerous awards and honors. In addition to his wins at the Naumburg International Piano Competition and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, he has also been awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award. Hecht continues to perform and teach, and his dedication to his craft has made him one of the most respected and admired pianists of his generation.
