Johan Reuter is a Danish bass-baritone opera singer who has gained international recognition for his powerful and expressive voice. Born on October 1, 1969, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Reuter grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical singer. Reuter started singing at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Reuter began his formal music education at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied under the guidance of Professor Susanna Eken. He later continued his studies at the Opera Academy in Copenhagen, where he received further training in opera performance. During his studies, Reuter won several awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Léonie Sonning Music Prize in 2009. Reuter made his professional debut in 1996 at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, where he performed the role of Colline in Puccini's La Bohème. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and expressive stage presence, and he was soon invited to perform at major opera houses around the world. One of Reuter's most notable performances was his portrayal of Wotan in Wagner's Ring Cycle at the Royal Danish Opera in 2006. His performance was widely praised for its depth and emotional intensity, and it cemented his reputation as one of the leading bass-baritones of his generation. Reuter has also performed at many other major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. He has worked with some of the most renowned conductors and directors in the world, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Peter Sellars. In addition to his opera performances, Reuter has also appeared in concert and recital settings. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Schubert's Winterreise with pianist Helmut Deutsch. In addition to the Léonie Sonning Music Prize, he has been awarded the Danish Music Critics' Prize, the Reumert Prize, and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Dannebrog.
