The Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra (LSSO) is a classical music ensemble based in Vilnius, Lithuania. Founded in 1940, the orchestra has become one of the most prominent cultural institutions in the country, known for its high-quality performances and dedication to promoting Lithuanian music. The LSSO was established during a time of political upheaval in Lithuania. In 1940, the country was occupied by the Soviet Union, and the new government sought to establish a national symphony orchestra as a symbol of cultural identity. The orchestra was initially led by conductor Balys Dvarionas, a prominent Lithuanian composer and pianist. Under Dvarionas' leadership, the LSSO quickly gained a reputation for excellence. The orchestra's first concert, held in 1940, featured works by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Lithuanian composer Juozas Gruodis. Over the years, the LSSO has continued to perform a wide range of classical repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary music. One of the LSSO's defining characteristics is its commitment to promoting Lithuanian music. The orchestra has premiered numerous works by Lithuanian composers, including Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, Bronius Kutavičius, and Osvaldas Balakauskas. The LSSO has also collaborated with many of Lithuania's most prominent musicians, including violinist Gidon Kremer and conductor Saulius Sondeckis. Over the years, the LSSO has undergone several changes in leadership. In 1955, the orchestra was taken over by the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture, and in 1960, conductor Juozas Domarkas was appointed as the LSSO's new artistic director. Under Domarkas' leadership, the orchestra continued to thrive, performing throughout Europe and Asia and earning critical acclaim for its recordings. In the 1990s, the LSSO underwent a period of transition as Lithuania regained its independence from the Soviet Union. The orchestra faced financial difficulties and struggled to maintain its reputation in the face of competition from other European orchestras. However, the LSSO persevered, and in 2004, conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius was appointed as the orchestra's new artistic director. Under Rinkevičius' leadership, the LSSO has continued to flourish. The orchestra has performed at major international festivals, including the BBC Proms and the Edinburgh International Festival, and has collaborated with renowned soloists such as pianist Lang Lang and cellist Mischa Maisky. The LSSO has also continued to champion Lithuanian music, commissioning new works and recording albums of music by Lithuanian composers. One of the LSSO's most notable achievements in recent years was its performance at the 2018 World Lithuanian Song Festival. The festival, held in Vilnius, brought together thousands of Lithuanian singers and musicians from around the world. The LSSO performed a program of Lithuanian music, including works by Čiurlionis and Kutavičius, to great acclaim. The LSSO has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2015, the orchestra was awarded the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts, the country's highest cultural honor. The LSSO has also been recognized for its recordings, including a Grammy nomination for its album of music by Lithuanian composer Vytautas Barkauskas. The LSSO's current roster includes over 80 musicians, many of whom have been with the orchestra for decades. The orchestra's principal conductor is Modestas Pitrėnas, who was appointed in 2019.
