Role:EnsemblePeriod:ClassicalRomanticModernGenre:ChamberBourgogne Quatuor Manfred is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1986 in Dijon, France. The quartet is named after the famous Romantic composer, Robert Schumann's, piano quintet, which is also known as the "Manfred Quartet." The ensemble has been praised for its unique sound and interpretation of classical music, and has won numerous awards for its performances. The founding members of the Bourgogne Quatuor Manfred were violinists Jean-Francois Girard and Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian, violist Marie Chilemme, and cellist Eric-Maria Couturier. All four members were graduates of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, and had previously played in various orchestras and ensembles before coming together to form the quartet. The ensemble quickly gained recognition for its exceptional performances, and in 1988, they won the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich, Germany. This award helped to launch their international career, and they began performing in major concert halls throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. Over the years, the Bourgogne Quatuor Manfred has collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianist Martha Argerich, cellist Gautier Capuçon, and violinist Renaud Capuçon. They have also recorded numerous albums, including works by Beethoven, Schubert, and Ravel. One of the highlights of the ensemble's career was their performance at the 2007 Salzburg Festival, where they played Schubert's String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, also known as "Death and the Maiden." The performance was widely praised for its emotional depth and technical precision, and helped to solidify the quartet's reputation as one of the leading ensembles in the world. In addition to their performances, the Bourgogne Quatuor Manfred is also committed to music education, and regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians. They have been artists-in-residence at several universities and music schools, including the University of California, Berkeley, and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. Throughout their career, the Bourgogne Quatuor Manfred has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances, including the Diapason d'Or, the Grand Prix du Disque, and the Victoires de la Musique Classique. They have also been named Chevaliers of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government, in recognition of their contributions to the arts. Today, the Bourgogne Quatuor Manfred continues to perform and record, and remains one of the most respected and admired classical music ensembles in the world. Their unique sound and interpretation of classical music has inspired countless musicians and audiences, and their legacy will continue to be felt for generations to come.More....
