Born on May 12, 1921, in Stockholm, Sweden, Söderström was the son of a music teacher and a pianist. His parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Söderström began his musical training at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he studied piano and composition. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher Rosina Lhévinne. Söderström's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. In 1947, he won the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, Belgium, which helped to launch his career as a concert pianist. Throughout his career, Söderström performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, earning critical acclaim for his performances. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin, and his performances were characterized by their technical precision and emotional depth.
