Role:ComposerBirth:April 23, 1962Period:ContemporaryGenre:KeyboardJyrki Linjama was a Finnish composer who was born on December 22, 1956, in Helsinki, Finland. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father was a pianist and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Linjama began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He showed a natural talent for music and quickly progressed in his studies. He later studied composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he was mentored by the renowned Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara. Linjama's early works were influenced by the Finnish folk music tradition, and he often incorporated elements of folk music into his compositions. He was also influenced by the works of other Finnish composers, such as Jean Sibelius and Magnus Lindberg. One of Linjama's early works, "Kalevala Fantasy," was inspired by the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala. The piece was premiered in 1982 and received critical acclaim. It was later recorded by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and released on CD. Linjama's music is characterized by its use of rich harmonies, intricate rhythms, and colorful orchestration. He often used unconventional instruments in his compositions, such as the accordion and the kantele, a traditional Finnish stringed instrument. In addition to his work as a composer, Linjama was also a respected music educator. He taught composition at the Sibelius Academy and was a mentor to many young composers. One of Linjama's most significant works is his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 1990. The piece is a large-scale work that showcases Linjama's mastery of orchestration and his ability to create complex musical structures. The symphony was well-received by audiences and critics alike and established Linjama as one of Finland's leading composers. Another notable work by Linjama is his "Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra," which was premiered in 1995. The piece features the accordion as a solo instrument and showcases the instrument's versatility and expressive capabilities. The concerto was recorded by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and released on CD. Linjama's music has been performed by many leading orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the London Sinfonietta. His works have also been featured at many international music festivals, including the Helsinki Festival and the Warsaw Autumn Festival. Sadly, Linjama's career was cut short when he passed away in 2003 at the age of 46. However, his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences around the world.More....
