Bernhard Kontarsky was born on June 4, 1937, in Iserlohn, Germany. He was the younger brother of Aloys Kontarsky, who was also a renowned pianist and composer. Bernhard began his musical training at a young age, studying piano and composition with his brother and other notable teachers. In 1957, Bernhard and Aloys formed a piano duo, which quickly gained recognition for their unique interpretations of contemporary music. They performed together for over 30 years, touring extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. The Kontarsky brothers were known for their technical precision and their ability to bring out the nuances of complex compositions. Bernhard also had a successful solo career, performing as a soloist with major orchestras and at prestigious music festivals. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Arnold Schoenberg, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and other modern composers. He was also a respected chamber musician, collaborating with other notable artists such as cellist Heinrich Schiff and violinist Gidon Kremer. Throughout his career, Bernhard received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1971, he was awarded the German Record Critics' Prize for his recording of Stockhausen's "Mantra" with his brother Aloys. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1997 for his contributions to the arts. One of Bernhard's most notable performances was his interpretation of Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire" in 1974. The performance was widely praised for its emotional depth and technical precision, and it cemented Bernhard's reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of modern classical music. Bernhard continued to perform and record throughout his career, even after his brother Aloys' death in 2016. He remained an active member of the classical music community until his own death on October 21, 2019, at the age of 82. Bernhard Kontarsky's legacy in classical music is one of technical precision, emotional depth, and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of contemporary music. His contributions to the piano duo genre, as well as his solo and chamber music performances, have left an indelible mark on the classical music world.
