Darrell Ang is a Singaporean conductor who has made a name for himself in the classical music world. Born on 17 July 1979 in Singapore, Ang showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He later took up the violin and studied at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore. Ang's interest in conducting began when he was a student at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. He was studying violin performance at the time, but was drawn to the conducting program at the school. He began studying with Gustav Meier, a renowned conductor and teacher, and quickly developed a passion for conducting. After completing his studies at the Peabody Institute, Ang went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London. He continued to study conducting and worked with some of the top conductors in the world, including Bernard Haitink and Sir Colin Davis. Ang's career as a conductor began to take off in the early 2000s. He was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 2003, and quickly gained a reputation as a talented and dynamic conductor. He also began to work with other orchestras around the world, including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestre National de Lille in France. One of Ang's most notable performances came in 2007, when he conducted the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2. The performance was widely praised by critics and established Ang as a rising star in the classical music world. In 2010, Ang was appointed as the principal conductor of the Sinfonieorchester Basel in Switzerland. This was a major milestone in his career, as it made him one of the youngest conductors to lead a major European orchestra. During his time with the Sinfonieorchester Basel, Ang conducted a wide range of repertoire and collaborated with some of the top soloists in the world. Ang's success with the Sinfonieorchester Basel led to other high-profile conducting engagements. He has conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. In addition to his work as a conductor, Ang is also a passionate advocate for music education. He has worked with young musicians around the world, and has served as a guest conductor and mentor for youth orchestras in Singapore, Switzerland, and other countries. Ang's talent and dedication to his craft have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2012, he was awarded the Young Artist Award by the National Arts Council of Singapore, which recognizes young artists who have made significant contributions to the arts in Singapore. He was also named a Cultural Medallion recipient in 2019, the highest honor for arts and culture in Singapore. Today, Darrell Ang is considered one of the most exciting and dynamic conductors of his generation. He continues to work with orchestras around the world, and is committed to sharing his love of music with audiences and young musicians alike.
