Zanasi started playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Zanasi's early musical education was at the Conservatory of Bologna, where he studied under the guidance of renowned cellist Enrico Mainardi. He later continued his studies at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, where he was mentored by the legendary cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich. Zanasi's career as a professional cellist began in the early 1980s when he joined the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.
