Born on December 9, 1987, in Durham, North Carolina, Joshua grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Donald Weilerstein, is a violinist and his mother, Vivian Hornik Weilerstein, is a pianist. His sister, Alisa Weilerstein, is also a renowned cellist. Joshua began playing the violin at the age of four and showed exceptional talent from a young age. He studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance. He also studied conducting with David Zinman at the Aspen Music Festival and School. In 2009, Joshua won the Malko Competition for Young Conductors in Copenhagen, Denmark, which launched his career as a conductor. He has since conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Orchestre de Paris.
