He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a pianist and his mother was a singer. Montorio showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Montorio's talent was recognized early on, and he began studying with some of the best teachers in Spain. He made his debut as a pianist at the age of nine, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in major concert halls throughout Europe. In 1915, Montorio moved to Paris to study with the renowned pianist and composer Maurice Ravel. He quickly became one of Ravel's star pupils, and Ravel recognized Montorio's talent as a composer as well as a pianist. Montorio's compositions were heavily influenced by Ravel's style, and he went on to compose a number of works for piano and orchestra. Montorio's career as a pianist took off in the 1920s, and he became known for his virtuosic performances of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Beethoven. He also performed his own compositions, which were well-received by audiences and critics alike. In 1928, Montorio made his debut in the United States, performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The concert was a huge success, and Montorio quickly became a favorite of American audiences.
