Role:ConductorPeriod:BaroqueClassicalGenre:ChoralConcertoLudger Remy is a renowned German conductor, harpsichordist, and musicologist who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on August 22, 1957, in the city of Essen, Germany, Remy showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later switched to the harpsichord, which became his primary instrument. Remy received his musical education at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, where he studied harpsichord with Hugo Ruf and conducting with Rolf Reuter. He also studied musicology at the University of Cologne, where he earned his doctorate in 1987 with a thesis on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Remy's career as a conductor began in 1983 when he founded the ensemble Les Amis de Philippe, which specialized in the performance of Baroque music. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming, and Remy became known as one of the leading interpreters of Baroque music in Germany. In addition to his work with Les Amis de Philippe, Remy has conducted many other orchestras and ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, and the Academy of Ancient Music. He has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including Andreas Scholl, Emma Kirkby, and Christoph Prégardien. One of Remy's most significant achievements as a conductor was his complete recording of the harpsichord concertos of Johann Sebastian Bach. The recording, which was released on the CPO label between 2000 and 2005, was praised for its clarity, precision, and musicality, and it remains one of the most highly regarded recordings of Bach's harpsichord concertos. Remy has also been recognized for his work as a musicologist. In addition to his doctoral thesis on Bach, he has published many articles and books on Baroque music, including a critical edition of the complete works of Johann Philipp Krieger. He has also served as a professor of musicology at the University of Mainz and the University of Leipzig. Throughout his career, Remy has received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1999, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services to music. He has also received the Echo Klassik award, the Diapason d'Or, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, among others. Despite his many achievements, Remy remains committed to his work as a conductor and musicologist. He continues to perform and record with Les Amis de Philippe and other ensembles, and he remains an active scholar and teacher. His dedication to the music of the Baroque era has helped to ensure that this rich and complex musical tradition will continue to be appreciated and enjoyed by audiences around the world.More....
