The University of Florida Wind Symphony is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over 60 years. Founded in 1956, the ensemble has become one of the most respected wind symphonies in the United States, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The ensemble was founded by Dr. Reid Poole, who served as its conductor for over 30 years. Under his leadership, the Wind Symphony quickly gained a reputation for excellence, performing at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Dr. Poole was succeeded by Dr. David Waybright, who continued to build on the ensemble's legacy of excellence. Today, the University of Florida Wind Symphony is led by Dr. David A. Waybright, who has been the director of bands at the University of Florida since 1993. Dr. Waybright is a highly respected conductor and educator, and has led the Wind Symphony to numerous accolades and awards. The Wind Symphony is made up of approximately 50 talented musicians, including undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty members and community members. The ensemble performs a wide range of repertoire, from traditional wind band music to contemporary works and world premieres. One of the highlights of the Wind Symphony's history was its performance at the 1992 Midwest Clinic, an annual conference for music educators and performers. The ensemble was one of only a handful of wind symphonies selected to perform at the conference, and its performance was met with critical acclaim. In addition to its performances at the Midwest Clinic, the Wind Symphony has also performed at the College Band Directors National Association Conference, the American Bandmasters Association Convention, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference. The Wind Symphony has also collaborated with numerous renowned composers and soloists, including John Corigliano, Michael Colgrass, and Wynton Marsalis. These collaborations have resulted in world premieres of new works and unforgettable performances. The Wind Symphony has also released several recordings, including "The Music of David Maslanka," which was named a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize in Music. The ensemble's recordings have received critical acclaim and have been featured on radio programs such as NPR's "Performance Today." In addition to its performances and recordings, the Wind Symphony is also committed to music education and outreach. The ensemble regularly hosts workshops and clinics for high school and middle school students, and has performed at numerous schools and community events throughout Florida. Overall, the University of Florida Wind Symphony is a world-class ensemble that has earned its reputation as one of the finest wind symphonies in the United States. Its commitment to excellence, innovative programming, and dedication to music education make it a true asset to the University of Florida and the wider music community.
