The Lendvai String Trio is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and virtuosic performances for over two decades. The trio was founded in 1999 by three talented musicians, violinist Nadia Wijzenbeek, violist Ylvali Zilliacus, and cellist Marie Macleod, who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to explore the rich repertoire of string trio music. Nadia Wijzenbeek, a Dutch violinist, began her musical studies at the age of six and went on to study at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. She has performed as a soloist with many orchestras and has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Dutch Music Prize. Ylvali Zilliacus, a Swedish violist, studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and has performed with many orchestras and ensembles throughout Europe. Marie Macleod, a Scottish cellist, studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and has performed with many orchestras and chamber ensembles in the UK and abroad. The Lendvai String Trio takes its name from the Hungarian composer György Ligeti's String Trio, which was dedicated to the Lendvai sisters, three Hungarian violinists who were known for their virtuosic performances. The trio has been praised for its technical precision, expressive playing, and deep musical understanding. They have performed at many prestigious venues and festivals, including the Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Edinburgh International Festival. One of the highlights of the Lendvai String Trio's career was their performance of Beethoven's complete string trios at the Wigmore Hall in 2007. This was a major undertaking, as Beethoven's string trios are considered some of the most challenging works in the chamber music repertoire. The trio's performance was praised for its energy, passion, and technical brilliance, and it cemented their reputation as one of the leading string trios of their generation. The Lendvai String Trio has also been recognized for their recordings, which have received critical acclaim and won several awards. Their recording of Mozart's Divertimento in E-flat Major, K. 563, was awarded the Diapason d'Or in 2010, and their recording of Beethoven's string trios was nominated for a Gramophone Award in 2008. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Lendvai String Trio is committed to promoting the music of contemporary composers. They have commissioned and premiered works by many composers, including Mark-Anthony Turnage, Brett Dean, and Sally Beamish. They have also collaborated with other musicians and ensembles, including the pianist Ronald Brautigam and the Arditti Quartet. The Lendvai String Trio continues to inspire audiences with their passionate and virtuosic performances. They are dedicated to exploring the rich repertoire of string trio music and to promoting the music of contemporary composers. Their commitment to excellence and their deep musical understanding have made them one of the most respected and admired chamber ensembles of their generation.
