Chamber Music Northwest is a classical music ensemble based in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 1971 by violinist Sergiu Luca and pianist David Shifrin, the ensemble has become one of the most respected and innovative chamber music groups in the United States. The founding of Chamber Music Northwest was inspired by the desire to create a chamber music festival in the Pacific Northwest that would rival the best in the world. Luca and Shifrin, both accomplished musicians with extensive experience in chamber music, saw an opportunity to bring together some of the finest musicians in the region to perform and collaborate on new works. Over the years, Chamber Music Northwest has grown in size and scope, attracting top musicians from around the world to perform in its annual summer festival and year-round concert series. The ensemble has also commissioned and premiered numerous new works by contemporary composers, including John Harbison, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, and Jennifer Higdon. One of the hallmarks of Chamber Music Northwest is its commitment to diversity and inclusivity. The ensemble has actively sought out musicians from underrepresented communities and has worked to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all performers and audiences. The core members of Chamber Music Northwest have changed over the years, but the ensemble has always maintained a high level of musical excellence.
