Born in 1962 in Houston, Texas, Adkins grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a professional trumpet player, and his mother was a pianist and music teacher. Adkins began playing the cello at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Adkins received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Houston and went on to earn his Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School in New York City. While at Juilliard, Adkins studied with renowned cellist Leonard Rose and was a member of the Juilliard String Quartet. He also won several prestigious awards, including the Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. After completing his studies, Adkins joined the Houston Symphony Orchestra as principal cellist, a position he held for 23 years. During his tenure with the orchestra, Adkins performed as a soloist with the Houston Symphony on numerous occasions, including performances of the Dvorak Cello Concerto and the Elgar Cello Concerto. He also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Christoph Eschenbach, Hans Graf, and Leonard Slatkin. In addition to his work with the Houston Symphony, Adkins has also been an active chamber musician and soloist. He has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and the Seattle Chamber Music Society, among others. He has also recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of the complete Bach Cello Suites. Adkins is also a dedicated music educator and has taught at several prestigious institutions, including Rice University's Shepherd School of Music and the University of Texas at Austin. He has also served as the artistic director of the Texas Music Festival and the Sarasota Music Festival, where he has mentored countless young musicians. Throughout his career, Adkins has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 2014, he was awarded the Houston Symphony's Ima Hogg Award for his outstanding contributions to the orchestra. He has also been recognized by the Texas Music Festival and the Sarasota Music Festival for his dedication to music education.
