Born on May 12, 1945, in Stockholm, Sweden, Nordwall showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue music as a career. Nordwall's musical education began at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where she studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Gunnar de Frumerie. She later continued her studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she received a scholarship to study under the guidance of Rosina Lhévinne. Nordwall's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and she quickly gained recognition for her exceptional skills as a pianist. In 1967, she won the prestigious Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah, which marked the beginning of her successful career as a concert pianist. Over the years, Nordwall performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. She also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Nordwall's repertoire was vast and included works by some of the greatest composers in history, such as Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, and Schumann. She was particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Swedish composer Wilhelm Stenhammar, whose music she championed throughout her career. In addition to her successful career as a concert pianist, Nordwall was also a respected teacher and mentor to many young musicians. She taught at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the Juilliard School in New York City, where she inspired and influenced a new generation of pianists. Throughout her career, Nordwall received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the world of music. In 1972, she was awarded the Litteris et Artibus medal by the Swedish government for her outstanding achievements in the arts. She was also awarded the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's Léonie Sonning Music Prize in 1985, which is considered one of the most prestigious music awards in the world. Despite her success, Nordwall remained humble and dedicated to her craft throughout her life. She continued to perform and teach until her death on December 28, 2019, at the age of 74.
