Artist Info
Period:RomanticGenre:OperaMario Filippeschi was an Italian tenor who was born on December 7, 1907, in the town of Montefiore Conca, located in the province of Rimini, Italy. He was the son of a farmer and grew up in a family of modest means. Despite this, he showed an early interest in music and began singing in his local church choir at a young age. Filippeschi's talent was soon recognized, and he began studying music formally at the Conservatory of Pesaro. He made his professional debut in 1930, singing the role of the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto at the Teatro Comunale in Florence. This performance was a great success, and Filippeschi quickly established himself as one of the leading tenors of his generation. Over the course of his career, Filippeschi performed in many of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Verdi, Puccini, and Mozart, and his performances of roles such as Radames in Aida, Cavaradossi in Tosca, and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni were widely acclaimed. One of the highlights of Filippeschi's career came in 1951, when he was invited to perform at the Salzburg Festival in Austria. He sang the role of Don Ottavio in a production of Don Giovanni conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler, and his performance was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. This led to further invitations to perform at the festival in subsequent years, and Filippeschi became a regular fixture at Salzburg. Filippeschi also received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1953, he was awarded the prestigious Viotti d'Oro prize for his contributions to the world of opera. He was also made a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1960, in recognition of his achievements as a musician. Despite his success, Filippeschi remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He was known for his meticulous preparation and attention to detail, and he was always striving to improve his performances. He was also a generous mentor to younger singers, and many of his students went on to have successful careers in their own right. Filippeschi's career came to an end in the early 1970s, when he began to suffer from health problems. He retired from the stage in 1972, after a final performance of Verdi's Otello at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He passed away on August 28, 1979, at the age of 71. Today, Mario Filippeschi is remembered as one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century. His recordings continue to be admired for their beauty, clarity, and emotional depth, and his legacy lives on through the many singers he inspired and mentored over the course of his career.More....
