Poggi showed an early interest in music and began studying the violin at the age of six. However, he soon switched to singing and began taking voice lessons. Poggi's talent was recognized early on, and he made his debut at the age of 19 in a production of Verdi's "La Traviata" in Piacenza. He quickly gained a reputation as a promising young tenor and began performing in opera houses throughout Italy. In 1928, Poggi made his debut at La Scala in Milan, one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. He sang the role of Alfredo in "La Traviata" and received rave reviews. This performance launched his international career, and he began performing in opera houses throughout Europe. Poggi's voice was known for its clarity, power, and emotional depth. He was particularly renowned for his performances of Verdi's operas, and he became one of the leading interpreters of the composer's work. He also performed in operas by Puccini, Donizetti, and other Italian composers. In 1935, Poggi made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. He sang the role of Rodolfo in Puccini's "La Bohème" and received a standing ovation. He went on to perform at the Met for several seasons, becoming one of the most popular tenors of his time. Poggi's career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the Italian army. After the war, he resumed his career and continued to perform in opera houses throughout Europe and the United States. He also made several recordings, which are still highly regarded today. Poggi retired from performing in 1958 and became a voice teacher. He taught at the Conservatory of Milan and mentored several young singers who went on to have successful careers.
