Alexander Vilumanis was born on May 15, 1985, in Riga, Latvia. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a violinist. From a young age, Vilumanis showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Vilumanis received his formal music education at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and pedagogue Juris Kalnciems. During his studies, Vilumanis won several awards and competitions, including the 1st prize at the International Piano Competition in Tallinn, Estonia, in 2005. After completing his studies, Vilumanis continued to hone his skills and develop his career as a concert pianist. He has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, collaborating with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. One of Vilumanis's most notable performances was his debut with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra in 2008, where he performed Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. The performance was met with critical acclaim, and Vilumanis was praised for his technical prowess and emotional depth. In 2010, Vilumanis was invited to perform at the prestigious Chopin Festival in Warsaw, Poland, where he played a program of Chopin's works to a sold-out audience. The performance was broadcast live on national television and was widely regarded as one of the highlights of the festival. Vilumanis has also been recognized for his recordings, which have received critical acclaim and numerous awards. His recording of Chopin's complete Nocturnes was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque by the International Record Review, and his recording of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra was nominated for a Grammy Award. In addition to his performing and recording career, Vilumanis is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught masterclasses at several prestigious institutions, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Throughout his career, Vilumanis has been recognized for his exceptional talent and dedication to the art of classical piano. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Latvian Great Music Award in 2015 and the Order of the Three Stars, one of Latvia's highest honors, in 2018. Today, Vilumanis continues to perform and record, captivating audiences around the world with his virtuosic playing and profound musicality. He remains a leading figure in the world of classical piano, inspiring and influencing generations of musicians to come.
