Born on October 6, 1926, in Cologne, Germany, Koch showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at a young age. He later studied musicology, philosophy, and German literature at the University of Cologne, where he earned his doctorate in 1952. Koch's career in music began in 1953 when he became the conductor of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was appointed as the principal conductor of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1965. He held this position for over a decade and during this time, he conducted numerous concerts and recordings that earned him international acclaim. One of the highlights of Koch's career was his collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He conducted the orchestra in several performances, including a memorable concert in 1971, where he led the orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The concert was a huge success and was later released as a recording that received critical acclaim. Koch was also known for his work as a musicologist. He was particularly interested in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and published several books and articles on the subject. His research and analysis of Bach's music were highly regarded by scholars and musicians alike, and he was often invited to give lectures and seminars on the topic. In addition to his work as a conductor and musicologist, Koch was also a prolific composer. He wrote several pieces for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments, and his music was performed by many renowned musicians and orchestras. In 1977, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, one of the country's highest honors.
