Orfeo 55 is a French classical music ensemble that was founded in 2009 by Nathalie Stutzmann, a renowned French contralto and conductor. The ensemble is named after the Greek mythological figure Orpheus, who was known for his musical talents and ability to charm even the gods with his singing. Nathalie Stutzmann, who serves as the ensemble's artistic director and conductor, is a highly respected musician who has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. She is also a prolific recording artist, with over 30 albums to her name. The other members of Orfeo 55 are all accomplished musicians in their own right, with extensive experience performing in orchestras and chamber ensembles. The ensemble's core members include violinists David Plantier and Florence Malgoire, violist Antoine Tamestit, cellist Xavier Phillips, and harpsichordist and organist Olivier Baumont. Orfeo 55's repertoire spans a wide range of musical styles and periods, from Baroque and Classical to contemporary music. The ensemble is particularly known for its interpretations of works by Handel, Vivaldi, and Bach, as well as its collaborations with contemporary composers such as Michael Nyman and Bruno Coulais. One of the highlights of Orfeo 55's career was its performance at the 2012 Proms in London, where the ensemble performed Handel's "Messiah" to critical acclaim. The performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and was later released on CD and DVD. Orfeo 55 has also performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Salzburg Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival. The ensemble has collaborated with a number of renowned soloists, including mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and countertenor Philippe Jaroussky. In addition to its live performances, Orfeo 55 has released several critically acclaimed recordings. The ensemble's debut album, "Heroes from the Shadows," was released in 2010 and featured works by Handel, Vivaldi, and Gluck. The album received widespread praise for its innovative arrangements and virtuosic performances. Orfeo 55 has also recorded several albums with Nathalie Stutzmann as both conductor and soloist. In recognition of its achievements, Orfeo 55 has received several awards and nominations. The ensemble was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2013 for its recording of Handel's "Messiah," and has also received several awards from the French music industry, including the Victoires de la Musique Classique and the Diapason d'Or.
