Role:EnsembleThe Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra (BNRSO) is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Sofia, Bulgaria. Founded in 1935, the orchestra has established itself as one of the leading orchestras in Eastern Europe, with a rich history of performances and awards. The BNRSO was established by the Bulgarian National Radio as a means of promoting classical music in the country. The orchestra's first conductor was the Bulgarian composer and conductor Georgi Atanasov, who led the ensemble until 1944. During this time, the orchestra performed a wide range of classical works, including those by Bulgarian composers such as Pancho Vladigerov and Marin Goleminov. In the years following World War II, the BNRSO continued to grow and develop under the leadership of a number of distinguished conductors. These included Vassil Stefanov, who served as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1952 to 1968, and Dobrin Petkov, who led the ensemble from 1968 to 1970. One of the highlights of the BNRSO's early years was its performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 1955, which was broadcast live on Bulgarian National Radio and received widespread acclaim. The orchestra also performed a number of other major works during this period, including Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and Brahms' Symphony No. 2. In the 1970s and 1980s, the BNRSO continued to build its reputation as one of the leading orchestras in Eastern Europe. The orchestra performed extensively throughout Bulgaria and also toured internationally, with concerts in countries such as Germany, France, and the United States. During this period, the BNRSO worked with a number of distinguished conductors and soloists. These included the Bulgarian conductor Emil Tchakarov, who served as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1985 to 1988, and the Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter, who performed with the ensemble in 1986. In the 1990s and 2000s, the BNRSO continued to perform at a high level, with a number of notable performances and recordings. In 1995, the orchestra performed at the opening ceremony of the European Union Summit in Sofia, playing works by Bulgarian composers such as Vladigerov and Goleminov. In 2002, the BNRSO recorded a critically acclaimed album of works by the Bulgarian composer Alexander Vladigerov, which was released on the Naxos label. The album featured the pianist Ludmil Angelov as soloist and was praised for its virtuosity and musicality. In recent years, the BNRSO has continued to perform a wide range of classical works, including those by Bulgarian composers as well as works by composers from around the world. The orchestra has also worked with a number of distinguished conductors and soloists, including the Bulgarian conductor Rossen Milanov and the Russian pianist Denis Matsuev. One of the highlights of the BNRSO's recent performances was its 2019 concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London, which was part of the Southbank Centre's "Belief and Beyond Belief" festival. The orchestra performed works by Bulgarian composers as well as works by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, receiving a standing ovation from the audience. Over the years, the BNRSO has received a number of awards and honors for its performances and recordings. These include the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture's "Crystal Lyre" award, which the orchestra has won multiple times, as well as the "Golden Orpheus" award for its recording of works by Vladigerov.More....
