Linda Chatterton is a renowned classical flutist and recording artist who has captivated audiences around the world with her virtuosic performances and innovative programming. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1965, Chatterton began playing the flute at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She went on to study at the University of Minnesota, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance. After completing her undergraduate studies, Chatterton continued her musical education at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where she earned a Master of Music degree in flute performance. During her time at Eastman, she studied with some of the most renowned flutists in the world, including Bonita Boyd and Samuel Baron. Following her studies at Eastman, Chatterton embarked on a successful career as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles, including the Minnesota Orchestra, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with many distinguished musicians, including pianist James D'Leon, guitarist Maja Radovanlija, and harpist Rachel Brandwein. In addition to her live performances, Chatterton has released several critically acclaimed recordings. Her debut album, "The Silver Album," was released in 1995 and features works by composers such as Debussy, Ravel, and Poulenc. Her subsequent albums, including "Dance of the Blessed Spirits" and "The Enchanted Flute," have received similar praise for their artistry and technical excellence. Chatterton's performances have earned her numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 1993, she was a finalist in the National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition, and in 1995 she won first prize in the Artists International Competition in New York City. She has also been a recipient of the McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians and the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant. One of the highlights of Chatterton's career was her performance at the 2002 World Flute Society Convention in Helsinki, Finland. She was the only American flutist invited to perform at the convention, and her performance was met with enthusiastic acclaim from the international audience. Chatterton is also known for her commitment to promoting new music for the flute. She has commissioned and premiered works by many contemporary composers, including Libby Larsen, David Evan Thomas, and Daniel Dorff. She has also collaborated with the American Composers Forum and the American Music Center to support the creation and performance of new music. In addition to her performing and recording career, Chatterton is also an accomplished educator. She has taught at several universities and conservatories, including the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and the MacPhail Center for Music. She has also given masterclasses and workshops at institutions around the world, including the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Throughout her career, Linda Chatterton has been a passionate advocate for the flute and for classical music in general.
