Period:BaroqueGenre:ChamberClaude Wassmer is a French composer and conductor who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on December 22, 1938, in Strasbourg, France, Wassmer showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study composition and conducting at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg. Wassmer's early compositions were heavily influenced by the works of composers such as Igor Stravinsky and Olivier Messiaen. He also drew inspiration from the music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, which he incorporated into his own compositions. In 1964, Wassmer was awarded the Prix de Rome, a prestigious award for young composers. This allowed him to spend two years studying in Rome, where he was exposed to the works of Italian composers such as Claudio Monteverdi and Giuseppe Verdi. Upon his return to France, Wassmer began to establish himself as a composer and conductor. He founded the Ensemble Vocal de Strasbourg, a choir dedicated to performing contemporary music, and served as its conductor for several years. He also worked as a conductor for the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg and the Orchestre National de Lorraine. Wassmer's compositions have been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world. Some of his most notable works include "Le Livre des Prodiges," a cantata for choir and orchestra, and "Le Chant des Oiseaux," a piece for solo flute and orchestra. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Wassmer has also been involved in music education. He has taught at several conservatories in France and has served as a guest lecturer at universities in the United States and Canada. Throughout his career, Wassmer has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1992, he was awarded the Grand Prix de la Musique Symphonique by the French Ministry of Culture. He was also made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1997. Wassmer continues to compose and conduct to this day, and his works remain an important part of the classical music repertoire. His dedication to the art form and his contributions to the world of music have earned him a place among the great composers and conductors of our time.More....
