Finchley Children's Music Group (FCMG) is a renowned classical music ensemble based in London, England. Founded in 1958, the group has been dedicated to providing children and young people with the opportunity to learn and perform classical music at the highest level. The group was founded by Joy Barnard, a music teacher who wanted to create a choir for children in the Finchley area of London. She started with just a handful of children, but the group quickly grew in popularity and soon became a well-respected ensemble in the local community. Over the years, FCMG has had many talented members, including some who have gone on to have successful careers in music. The group has also been led by a number of talented conductors, including Grace Rossiter, who was the group's conductor for over 30 years. One of the highlights of FCMG's history was their performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 1975. The group was invited to perform as part of the BBC's "Young Musician of the Year" competition, and their performance was broadcast on national television. This was a major achievement for the group, and it helped to raise their profile and attract new members. FCMG has also won many awards and accolades over the years. In 1983, they won the Sainsbury's Choir of the Year competition, which was a major achievement for the group. They have also won numerous awards at the National Festival of Music for Youth, including the prestigious "Choir of the Festival" award in 2009. In addition to their performances in the UK, FCMG has also toured internationally. They have performed in countries such as France, Germany, Italy, and the United States, and have received rave reviews for their performances. One of the unique aspects of FCMG is their commitment to commissioning new works for children's voices. Over the years, they have commissioned works from a number of well-known composers, including John Tavener, Howard Goodall, and Bob Chilcott. These works have been performed by FCMG and other children's choirs around the world, and have helped to expand the repertoire for children's voices. FCMG has also been involved in a number of educational initiatives over the years. They have worked with schools and other organizations to provide music education and performance opportunities for children who might not otherwise have access to them. They have also run workshops and masterclasses for young singers, helping to inspire the next generation of musicians. Today, FCMG continues to be a vibrant and active ensemble, with over 200 members ranging in age from 4 to 18. They perform regularly in London and around the UK, and are known for their high standards of musicianship and professionalism. They continue to commission new works and collaborate with other musicians and ensembles, and are committed to providing children and young people with the opportunity to experience the joy of classical music.
