Pedro Lavirgen was a renowned Spanish tenor who was born on June 14, 1930, in the city of Granada, Spain. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Lavirgen showed a keen interest in singing and began taking vocal lessons at the age of 12. Lavirgen's talent was quickly recognized, and he was soon performing in local concerts and festivals. In 1950, he won first prize in the National Singing Competition in Madrid, which marked the beginning of his professional career. He went on to study at the Madrid Conservatory and later at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Lavirgen's career took off in the 1950s and 1960s, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after tenors in the world. He performed in some of the most prestigious opera houses and concert halls, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and La Scala in Milan. One of Lavirgen's most notable performances was his portrayal of Don José in Bizet's Carmen at the Royal Opera House in London in 1964. His performance was widely praised by critics and audiences alike, and it cemented his reputation as one of the greatest tenors of his time. Lavirgen was also known for his performances of Spanish and Latin American music. He recorded several albums of zarzuela, a form of Spanish operetta, and was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the music of Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca. In 1961, he was awarded the Gold Medal of Fine Arts by the Spanish government, and in 1970, he was named a Knight of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. He was also awarded the Medal of Honor of the City of Granada and the Medal of Honor of the Province of Granada. Lavirgen retired from performing in the 1980s but continued to be involved in the music world as a teacher and mentor to young singers. He passed away on December 15, 2013, at the age of 83.
