Period:BaroqueClassicalRomanticModernGenre:VocalMhairi Lawson is a Scottish soprano who has made a name for herself in the world of classical music. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, on May 17, 1978, Lawson grew up in a musical family. Her mother was a singer and her father played the piano, so it was only natural that she would develop a love for music at a young age. Lawson began her musical training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where she studied voice with Patricia MacMahon. She later went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where she was a student of Ashley Stafford. During her time at the Royal College of Music, Lawson won several awards, including the prestigious Tagore Gold Medal. After completing her studies, Lawson began her professional career as a soloist, performing with some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles. She has worked with the Academy of Ancient Music, the English Baroque Soloists, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, among others. One of Lawson's most notable performances was her portrayal of the role of Belinda in Henry Purcell's opera "Dido and Aeneas" at the Royal Opera House in London. The production was directed by Wayne McGregor and conducted by Christopher Hogwood. Lawson's performance was praised for its clarity and emotional depth. In addition to her work as a soloist, Lawson is also a member of the vocal ensemble Stile Antico. The group specializes in performing Renaissance and Baroque music, and has won numerous awards for their recordings and performances. Lawson has been a member of the ensemble since 2005, and has performed with them at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Wigmore Hall. Lawson's repertoire is wide-ranging, and includes works by composers such as Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Schubert. She is particularly known for her interpretations of Baroque music, and has been praised for her ability to bring a fresh perspective to familiar works. Throughout her career, Lawson has received numerous awards and accolades. In 2007, she was named a Rising Star by the European Concert Hall Organisation, which led to performances at some of Europe's most prestigious concert halls. She has also been awarded the Handel Prize by the London Handel Festival, and the Bach Prize by the Leipzig Bach Festival. In addition to her performing career, Lawson is also a respected teacher and vocal coach. She has taught at the Royal College of Music, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and the University of York. She is currently a professor of voice at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Lawson's recordings have been widely praised for their musicality and technical excellence. She has recorded several albums with Stile Antico, including "Song of Songs," which won the Gramophone Award for Early Music in 2009. She has also recorded solo albums, including "Handel's Queens," which features arias written for the female singers who performed in Handel's operas. In addition to her work as a performer and teacher, Lawson is also a dedicated advocate for the arts. She has served on the board of the National Youth Choir of Scotland, and is a patron of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. She is also a trustee of the Handel House Foundation, which works to promote the music of Handel and his contemporaries.More....
