Ensemble Vivant is a Canadian classical music ensemble that was founded in 1988 by pianist Catherine Wilson. The ensemble is known for its unique blend of classical, jazz, and world music, and has been praised for its virtuosic performances and innovative programming. Catherine Wilson, who serves as the ensemble's artistic director and pianist, founded Ensemble Vivant with the goal of creating a chamber music ensemble that would showcase the versatility and range of classical music. Wilson, who had previously performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Canadian Opera Company, recruited a group of talented musicians to join the ensemble, including violinist Corey Gemmell, cellist Sybil Shanahan, violist Norman Hathaway, and bassist Jim Vivian. From its earliest performances, Ensemble Vivant was praised for its dynamic and engaging performances, which blended classical music with jazz, folk, and world music influences. The ensemble quickly gained a following in Canada and began to tour internationally, performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. Over the years, Ensemble Vivant has undergone several personnel changes, but has remained committed to its mission of showcasing the diversity and richness of classical music. Today, the ensemble includes Catherine Wilson on piano, Corey Gemmell on violin, Sybil Shanahan on cello, Norman Hathaway on viola, and Kevin Turcotte on trumpet. Ensemble Vivant has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including several Juno Awards, which are Canada's highest honor for music. The ensemble's album "Portrait of Duke Ellington" won the Juno Award for Best Mainstream Jazz Album in 1992, and the ensemble was also awarded the Juno for Best Classical Album in 1998 for their album "Tango Nuevo." In addition to their Juno Awards, Ensemble Vivant has also been recognized for their contributions to Canadian music and culture. The ensemble was awarded the Order of Canada in 2001, which is one of the country's highest honors, and was also inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2014. Ensemble Vivant has performed with some of the world's most renowned musicians, including jazz pianist Oscar Peterson, classical guitarist Liona Boyd, and jazz saxophonist Phil Woods. The ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of artists from different genres, including folk singer Sylvia Tyson, blues guitarist Colin Linden, and world music ensemble Autorickshaw. One of Ensemble Vivant's most notable performances was their appearance at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where they performed at the opening ceremony. The ensemble's performance, which included a medley of Canadian folk songs and classical pieces, was widely praised for its energy and creativity. Ensemble Vivant has also been recognized for their commitment to music education and outreach. The ensemble has performed in schools and community centers across Canada, and has worked with young musicians to help them develop their skills and passion for music. In recent years, Ensemble Vivant has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, incorporating new styles and influences into their performances. The ensemble's most recent album, "The Road Ahead," features a mix of classical, jazz, and world music, and showcases the ensemble's versatility and virtuosity.
